The Electron Microscope Unit (EMU) is a central research and research support unit within the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) at UNSW Sydney. The resources of the EMU are available to the entire UNSW Sydney community as well as industry and other external clients. These resources include instruments for the study of structure and composition of biological, chemical and physical materials as well as highly trained and experienced staff who provide technical and scientific support. The EMU is a founding node of Microscopy Australia, which is the peak body for nanostructural analysis in Australia.

Reporting to the Associate Director - Electron Microscope Unit, Dr Daniel Luque, you will provide technical support and training to biological and cryo-users of the EMU to ensure that high quality data is acquired. You’ll also be responsible for the day-to-day operation of transmission electron microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, and biological and soft-matter specimen preparation related to these techniques within a PC2 environment.

Who you are

You have a diploma-level qualification and or experience in biological science, particularly in biological microscopy and soft materials imaging and can demonstrate your expertise in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and/or scanning electron microscopy (SEM) within a relevant biological context. Experience in ultramicrotomy, histological sectioning, or soft material sample preparation techniques is highly desirable, as is familiarity with working in a PC2 laboratory environment. You’ll also be proficient in sample preparation for diverse specimen types and able to operate multiple TEMs and SEMs.

Strong skills in using scientific software and the capacity to quickly learn new systems are essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively engage with various stakeholders are critical. Additionally, you should be a collaborative team player, committed to UNSW’s values and objectives, and have a good understanding of health and safety responsibilities, including a willingness to attend relevant training.
