The Opportunity

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow. In this role, you will conduct research both independently and as part of a team on a Cooperative Research Centre project in collaboration with Ecopha Biotech to develop biodegradable healthcare packaging products. Your research will focus on modifying the biodegradable polymer polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) produced by Ecopha Biotech, with the aim of creating healthcare packaging products that replace traditional petroleum-based plastics. This will offer environmentally friendly solutions and help reduce plastic packaging waste in society.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your industry research and professional activities. You will also have the chance to participate in conferences and workshops, assist with grant proposals, publish research, supervise students, collaborate with industry partners, and actively engage with fellow researchers both at UNSW and other institutions.

This role reports to Prof Jin Zhang and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level A – AUD $110,059 to $117,718 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract – 12 months

Skills and Experience

  • A PhD in chemistry, chemical/materials engineering, with relevant work experience on modification of polymers and enhance properties.
  • Demonstrated track record of journal paper publications in polymer modification.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
