About the Role

The role of Lecturer reports to the Director of Clinical Teaching and has no direct reports. The Lecturer will work as part of the clinic team which includes the Clinic Practice Manager, reception staff, optical dispensers and academic staff, undertaking a work profile of one lecture per week on Monday afternoons. You will be required to undertake and have experience in the following areas of expertise:

  • Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
  • Conduct clinical supervision, classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in line with UNSW policy.
  • Design and develop clinical learning activities and resources, and assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
  • Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning including the clinical context with the support of more senior academics.
  • Work with the UNSW Optometry Clinic to review the triage protocols being developed with the Sydney Children’s Hospital team.
  • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
  • Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge, and minimum professional accreditation requirements.
  • Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
  • Ensure patients in their direct care or supervised care receive appropriate and timely treatment and follow-up.

About You

  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Registration as an Orthoptist in Australia.
  • Advanced knowledge in clinical areas relevant to the operation of the Optometry Clinic and the ophthalmic professions and the ability to deliver appropriate patient care.
  • Actively stays up to date with discipline knowledge and professional development.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g., relevant discipline based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning (desirable).
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
