The Opportunity
- $100,354-$107,054 (depending on exp.) + 17% super + leave loading
- Full-time (35 hours week)
- 2-year fixed term contract
The Recombinant Products Facility (RPF) provides services and training in the production and purification of biologics (including proteins, nucleic acids and bacteriophage). The Facility manages and operates state of-the-art equipment including microbial fermentation, cell culture, mid-stream processing including TFF, process chromatography, HPLC and a range of analytical equipment. The Facility operates under an ISO9001-accredited Quality Management System (QMS).
The Technical Officer will take a lead role in providing access to high quality research infrastructure, training and provision of services to industry in compliance with ISO9001 standards. Key responsibilities include designing and running experiments for the production of biologics (including recombinant proteins) in bioreactors, undertaking biologics purification using filtration and chromatography and characterising the purified biologics using a range of assays.
The Technical Officer reports to the Manager, Recombinant Products Facility (RPF) and has no direct reports.

About the successful applicant:
You hold a degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field, with relevant experience or equivalent knowledge gained through a combination of education, training, or experience and can demonstrate your expertise in protein biotechnology, including fermentation, cell culture, gene cloning, protein chromatography, and protein analysis.
You’ve worked under a documented Quality Management System (QMS) and can demonstrate your ability to conduct independent laboratory work with minimal supervision, with strong attention to detail and a rigorous approach to experimental design and documentation.
You work well in team settings, contributing productively to shared projects, collaborating across disciplines, and building effective relationships with external partners. Your communication skills—both written and verbal—are excellent, enabling you to present and interpret analytical results clearly and write comprehensive scientific reports. You also have experience training and supervising others in a multidisciplinary research environment, offering support and technical guidance to researchers and students. You understand and are committed to UNSW’s aims, values, and policies, and you take your health and safety responsibilities seriously, including attending relevant training.
